The Power of Presence: Why Women Leaders Can’t Afford to Hide Their Brand

This article explores why personal branding is not self-promotion and why women leaders can’t afford to hide their expertise, voice and achievements.

For many years, women were encouraged to work quietly.

“Don’t be too loud.” “Let your work speak for itself.” “Stay humble and people will notice.”

But in today’s world, silence often means invisibility.

As we approach International Women’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on this year’s theme: “Give to Gain.”

As someone working closely with leaders on personal branding and visibility, this theme resonates deeply with me.

When a woman shows up, shares her story and contributes her expertise publicly, you are doing far more than promoting yourself.

You are giving.

You are giving ideas, insight, perspective and leadership to the world around you.

And when you do, something powerful happens.

Influence grows. Opportunities expand. Impact multiplies.

That is the true spirit of Give to Gain.

Visibility Is Not Vanity. It’s Leadership

One of the most common concerns I hear from female executives and founders is this:

“I don’t want to look like I’m promoting myself too much.”

But personal branding is not about noise or ego.

It’s about ensuring that your ideas, expertise and perspective can reach the people who need them.

Today, leadership is no longer confined to boardrooms or internal meetings.

When women leaders choose to stay silent, the world misses the benefit of their experience.

And in many cases, opportunities pass them by simply because their work is not visible enough.

I Have Seen the Power of Women Showing Up

As a female founder and personal branding strategist, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with and learn from incredible women who are creating impact far beyond themselves.

Women who are building communities, leading conversations and opening doors for others.

For instance:

What stands out about these women is not just what they do.

It is their willingness to share their journeys, perspectives and lessons openly.

And in doing so, they make it easier for others to learn, grow and step forward as well.

Breaking the Myth That Women Don’t Support Women

For a long time, there has been a narrative that women struggle to support each other.

My experience has been the complete opposite.

I have seen women:

  • recommend each other in rooms where opportunities are discussed

  • collaborate on projects that create shared impact

  • build communities that empower others to rise

When the right people align around shared values and vision, collaboration becomes incredibly powerful.

And many of the opportunities I have experienced in my own journey have come from women who were willing to open doors and create space.

That, to me, is what Give to Gain looks like in practice.

What I Hope to See More of

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, I hope to see more women leaders:

  • acknowledging their accomplishments

  • sharing their expertise and experiences

  • owning their voice in their industries

Because when women choose visibility, it doesn’t just benefit them.

It benefits the entire ecosystem around them.

Their teams learn from their insights. Their industries gain from their perspective. And the next generation sees what is possible.

Personal branding, when done with intention, is not about self-promotion.

It is about amplifying impact.

The Power of Presence

The world needs more women who are willing to step forward and say:

This is what I know. This is what I’ve learned. This is the impact I want to create.

This is the true power of presence.

As we reflect on the theme “Give to Gain,” may we continue to create spaces where women are encouraged to contribute, lead and be visible.

Because when women give their voice, their experience and their leadership to the world - we all gain.

If you’re a leader thinking about how to position your voice and expertise more strategically, this is a conversation I’m deeply passionate about. Email me at bookings@stephaniewambua.com to partner and collaborate.
