Last week, I received a call that left me both humbled and energised. It was from a leader I deeply admire, someone I’ve often thought, “When I grow up, I want to be like her.”
She invited me to facilitate a session on LinkedIn visibility and maintaining a Personal Brand for her cohort. What made it even more special? Although we had made a connection on LinkedIn, I had first met her at a recent networking event, where we had a simple, genuine conversation. She remembered what I do, trusted my expertise, and when her need arose, she called me.
This brings me to another similar experience as well. A few weeks ago, I was recommended for another facilitation session with digital marketers who had completed their digital marketing course. The referrer simply texted:
“Stephanie, someone is looking for a facilitator, and I thought of you. I’ve shared your contact.”
That’s one of the beauties of winning with your brand. Opportunities don’t just come from the people you know directly. They often come from second and third-degree connections who have experienced you through your content, your presence or your reputation.
And here’s the truth: This doesn’t happen by chance. It happens by design.
What It Means to Win With Your Brand
Winning with your brand isn’t about looking polished online once in a while. It’s about positioning yourself consistently so that opportunities find you even when you’re not in the room.
Here are five steps to start:
1. Find Clarity
What do you want your brand to achieve? Do you want speaking opportunities, clients, a better job or to break into new spaces? Clarity guides direction. Without it, you’re just making noise.
2. Build a Clear Plan
For example, if your goal is speaking opportunities, you need to show thought leadership. Share insights, publish content and make it clear that you are knowledgeable in your niche. People can only recommend you when they know what you stand for and what you do.They need to experience you through your work.
3. Create Valuable Content
Content is how people discover and remember you. This content can be published across various platforms, including LinkedIn posts, videos, articles and podcasts. Your content should solve problems, share insights and position you as a credible voice.
4. Stay Consistent
Winning with your brand is not a “one-post magic formula.” It’s about showing up again and again, even when it’s imperfect, even when it's hard, even when you don’t feel like it, even when results haven’t started showing yet. Consistency builds memorability and trust.
5. Build Community
You cannot win with your brand in isolation. Attend events, join communities and collaborate. Some of your most significant opportunities will come from people outside your immediate circles.
Remember: People can’t recommend you if they don’t know you.
Why This Matters
An article by Harvard Business Review argues that everyone has a personal brand and your success depends on helping others recognise your value, i.e., showing up consistently so people trust and choose you for opportunities
I also wrote an article on How Personal Branding Accelerates Career Growth: 5 Proven Steps for Professionals which dives deeper into why professionals cannot afford to ignore this.
The truth is: Everyone has a brand. The only difference is what you choose to do with it.
